About 300 students at Cromer High School and Language College participated in a Chinese thematic day on Wednesday March 10th.  As a Language College we try to promote an enjoyment in the learning of other languages and the purpose of this day was also to promote intercultural understanding and global awareness.  Students had the opportunity to develop their creative skills and work together in mixed age groups during the course of the day.

The day was organised by Ms Johnson and Mrs Munson and staff from the school ran sessions for the students to teach them more about the culture and traditions of China.  This theme was chosen as Cromer High has a link with Number 54 School in Shanghai, to which a group of students from the school hope to visit later on in the year.

We were delighted to have members of the local community helping us out on the day: John Mezzetti teaching Tai Chi, Tina and Mandy from “The New Inn” in Roughton demonstrating Chinese cooking and Yan Yan, a member of a “Confucius Classrooms” project, teaching Mandarin.

Students rotated around a variety of activities during the day.  In Art sessions Mr Collin and Ms Howden taught students how to make Chinese lanterns and explained the significance of the symbols decorating them.  In Music, Mrs Hough demonstrated how the pentatonic scale forms the basis of Chinese music.  Students then worked collaboratively to compose their own piece of music.  Drama and story telling (Mrs Burgoyne and Mr Hensley) had pupils reading stories from the Chinese tradition and performing their interpretation.   All students took part in a food based activity, either cooking a Chinese dish with Mrs Pull and the experts from the New Inn or  planning a menu to suit  certain occasions and practising the use of chop sticks, which was a challenge to some – but I’m sure Ms Wright is an expert now!

Yan Yan told everyone in an assembly at the start of the day, that the Chinese take their physical activity very seriously.  To fit in with this, all students had a session of Tai Chi with John Mezzetti – in fact some of the staff decided that would actually be a great way to start each day….!  They also played badminton and table tennis – sports in which the Chinese excel.

Last, but not least, all students were taught some basic mandarin by Yan Yan and learnt about the Chinese script.

It is hoped that some of our work will be taken over to China later on in the year to show Number 54 School the projects we worked on.

More than one student was held to comment “Can we do this everyday, Miss?”  Well, no!  But the general buzz was that it was a good day and lots was learnt!

Thanks to everyone who took part!

The BBC Concert Orchestra are performing an interactive Musicmix concert specially designed for key stage 3 and 4 pupils on Wednesday 17th March 2010 in Kings Lynn.

The concert is presented by Radio 1's Nihal Artanayake and will include performances of popular classical film and TV music. Live images of the orchestra and film excerpts will be projected onto large screens as well as an interview with a film music composer and a world premier of Harry Patch by Radiohead.

I have managed to secure a limited number of free tickets to the concert and so the only cost will be £4.60 for transport.
The coach will leave Cromer High School during morning registration and will return us to school around lunchtime. This is a fantastic opportunity to see a world famous orchestra performing well known pieces of music selected for a school aged audience and supporting the work done in music lessons.

I have to admit that I was not expecting a great deal when I attended the Cromer High School “Community Promotion Fair” on January 27th. My apologies to all the organisers, as it turned out to be well set up and interesting, in particular when you come across people like Helen Dalton-Hare from About With Friends which I knew so little of before. Ben (on left) was very keen to explain how much there is going on for him. This organisation is all about supporting young people with learning difficulties to have a social life, enjoy friendships and develop new life skills. I asked Kate Royall, the Extended School Coordinator, & the Head of Cromer High School, Glyn Hambling, how they felt the event had gone. Kate: This is all about networking as well as both the school & the exhibitors getting more involved with their community. I think it has gone very well. Glyn: As you say I hope we will do many more similar events in the future as it is so important to work along side the community we serve.

How long does it take to find out about all the societies and clubs in your local community? Answer: more than a life time.

As well as meeting many people I already know, I met several others including these two ladies Mary Iginla & Pam Long from The Joy Of Food. These two, alongside others, go out into the community teaching people from 14 to 30 how to cook and encouraging them to be confident with recipes and eat more healthily. As Mary & Pam put it: “Anyone can learn to cook. I would also say that we have had people who come to us who are unable to peel a potato.

As well as various Cromer Associations and Societies, there were people like Rochelle Mortimer Massingham (Below) representing the Aldborough Village History Society. There can be few people who know as much as Rochelle does about our community. As well as local schools, Cromer in Bloom, The North Norfolk Viking Swimming Club etc etc, The Cromer Society was there and represented by its Chairman Mr MacNish & Mr Branford. I look forward to the next one and may take a stand myself.
